The University of Ulster Men’s Volleyball team won the All-Ireland Premier League title on Sunday with an impressive 3-0 win against Queens University in their final league match of the season.
It has been over ten years since a team from Northern Ireland has won the All-Ireland Premier league and a first ever for the Ulster Elks team.
There was a large crowd at the University’s Jordanstown campus to watch the match on Sunday. The Ulster team knew a win against Queens would put them at the top of the table on set difference after a long hard season. The Ulster Elks team did not disappoint their supporters by winning the first set 25-17. The second set was much like the first, Queens were able to trade points with Ulster for the first half of the set until it was 14-14 and then Ulster picked up their game and won the 2nd set 25-17 as well.
In the third set with the hard work done and with a 23-17 lead all the substitutes got on the court to finish the set off 25-20 and the match 3-0. The win puts the Ulster team at the top of the league after all 12 of their matches.
Player coach Nick Wright said after the game “It has been a real honour to play with these guys this year. We have all put in so much work not just this year but for the past few years and to win the league for the first time in over 10 years is just rewards for the efforts of everyone on our team”.
“Today’s win wasn’t down to any single player but it was a full team effort as it has been all year and our supporters have been superb this year and it is great to win the title at home in front them”.
